H&M Newest Face – Ashley Graham, Only Sell For Plus-Size Online
Ashley Graham will be one of the three new faces of their studio collection in September.
The retail company made sure to point out in a press release that Ashley is not the star of their “body positivity” or “plus-size” collection. She’s simply the face of “H&M’s studio collection,” which is showing during Paris Fashion Week. It’s awesome that brands are catching on to the fact that they don’t have to put curvier women into a specialized category just because they aren’t super-skinny.
“It’s exciting to be representing one of the most internationally known fashion retailers that is not only offering more options for curvy women, but pieces that have a high fashion aesthetic,” Ashley told Harper’s Bazaar.
H&M’s creative advisor, Ann-Sofie Johansson, says this collection is inspired by “female strength and power, with a fresh look at folklore and romance. It’s very elevated, and also very real.”
However, Racked reports an interesting fact: H&M is only selling their plus-size options online, not in stores.
Their press release states, “plus size will be sold exclusively on hm.com.” But why only exclusively online? I have a curvy shape and it’s already hard enough for women like me to shop solely online because it’s essential to know how certain items of clothing will fit. While it’s wonderful that Ashley is the star of this campaign, this is doing a disservice to plus-size women who want to shop H&M’s studio collection, especially if they’re not fans of online shopping.
